Shark infested drift dive at Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort

With 35 dive sites within easy boat ride from Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort, it is no wonder that divers from all over the world flock to this wonderful island in the Maldives. The Sun Diving Centre at Olhuveli is impressively modern, with great kit, big fast dive boats, and good instructors who speak a myriad of languages from English to Japanese. On my second dive we did a reef channel drift dive down to about 30 meters, the visibility was amazing and on the way down we were serenaded by surgeon fish who swam rings round our air bubbles. At the bottom of the reef’s edge was an area of flat sand where sharks apparently like to hang out and Hassan the dive instructor was not wrong, no sooner had we got within sight of the sea bed we saw about ten sharks, mainly Black Tips but also a Hammer Head (I think) just relaxing on the sand. Once our presence was noted by these creatures of the deep, they stirred and casually swam around us and then headed off into deeper water, it was awesome to see them so close up, but fortunately not close enough to touch.
